EIGHTEEN
Eleanor Burke was sitting in front of her dressing-room mirror in Palm Beach. They certainly had come a long way from Chanceâs bootlegging days â which, as Eleanor rationalized, wasnât exactly bootlegging. He just owned the fleet of small boats that slid down the foggy Canadian coast and unloaded in Maine. Then there was that tiny speck of Jewish blood in her veins. No one questioned her and Chanceâs admission to the Everglades Club, especially after Chanceâs contribution to the new hospital. But now he was on the phone with one of those lowlifes from his past, someone named Buzzy, or maybe Bugsy, who had something to do with smuggling Scotch during Prohibition. But more important, he had arranged for their daughter Amyâs abortion.
It always made Eleanor nervous when she happened upon Chance making a call to this Buzzy or Bugsy fellow.
âYouâre out there?â Chance said. âWell, get it done.â
Out where? Not Chicago, Eleanor wondered. âOut thereâ sounded west to her rather than east â far west, not Chicago. Eldon was out there, too, announcing his engagement to Bunny Hatch, the daughter of Lady Sybil Hatch. Though her official title was âthe Dowager Countessâ, as she was the widow of the late Lord Hatch, the owner of Stonebridge. However, the property was a mess and would require immense infusions of cash from Chance Burke.
Eleanor dabbed some powder on her nose and emerged from her dressing room. She dared not ask specifically why he was on the phone. Chance hated it if he thought she was listening in on phone conversations.
âWho was that?â She feigned ignorance.
âNothing, darling.â
She was sure it was something and gave him a flirtatious little smile.
He smiled back. âCome here, honeybunch. Whatcha got under that? I can see your titties.â
âOh, Chance.â She sighed.
âCome on, a quickie.â He opened his dressing gown. âYou want me to put a black tie on this?â
Eleanor giggled. She did a little prancing dance toward the erect penis and climbed on top of him.
As he thrust into her, he wondered how that idiot son of theirs could be a pansy.
âOh, Chance!â she gasped.
Eleanor had no idea about Eldonâs proclivities. Chance would die before telling her. He couldnât imagine how she didnât suspect. But she didnât.
